Going Green in Your Palm Coast Home

With fall finally upon us, it may be the perfect time to “green-ify” your home and get it ready for the season. There are eco-friendly ways to decorate and make your home extra comfy! Here are just a few things you may like to try:

Update your windows.

You may think that switching to impact resistant windows is better for the summertime—but even during the autumn, you and your family can really benefit from these thicker, stronger types of window. While impact windows are the ideal option for Florida homeowners (due to their ability to protect your home from debris), their benefits last long beyond the end of Hurricane Season—which, incidentally, extends all the way through November. Impact windows can retain heat (or cold) in your home—so whatever temperature you like, you won’t be losing any of it to less efficient windows.

Install a programmable thermostat.

Another big part of going green this fall is only heating or cooling your home when you need to. A programmable thermostat, if you don’t have one already, can help you do just that. Such thermostats can be programmed to run when you’re home, and not when you’re out of the house, to lower energy consumption and your energy bill!

Change your window habits.

In addition to installing energy efficient impact windows, you may want to change your window habits to save energy as well. Using thick curtains to maintain your home’s temperature (and opening them when you want extra warmth) is a great option here in Florida… because while our neighbors up north may not believe it, fall and winter days can get pretty chilly here!

Update your insulation.

Insulation isn’t just good for keeping your home warm; it saves you money on your energy bill as well. If you have an older home, you may want to check that your insulation is up to par. An outside professional may help you do that.

Save energy costs by moving the fun outdoors.

Finally, one of the best (and easiest) ways to save on your energy bill and make your home more eco-friendly this fall is to bring the fun outdoors! Here in Florida, there is no better time to entertain outdoors than these approaching fall months, when temperatures are cooler and there is much less chance of rain and sudden storms running your outdoor entertaining.

How can you make your outdoor space entertainment friendly? A quick clean and the addition of some outdoor accessories may be all you need. Sweep up your patio or porch area regularly to make it clean and comfy for your guests. If your current outdoor furniture is old or uncomfortable, you may wish to replace it with newer, more relaxing pieces. Keep drinks and snacks in your outdoor kitchen to always be ready for company—and finally, consider adding an awning or umbrella to keep your guests comfy and in the shade. The next time you have a Halloween party or holiday get together, your patio entertaining space will be ready to go!
