If you want to make 2016 the year your home is at its cleanest and most organized state yet, why wait until spring to get your cleaning started? With the year finally in full swing, now is a great time to start new habits and get your home off to a fresh start. Today, we will be sharing five steps you can take today to get your home ready for a cleaner, tidier 2016.
Clear away the old
The very first step you should take when embarking on a home cleaning and reorganization project is to clear away the old—anything that’s unused, unwanted, taking up too much space, is no longer functional, etc. By doing so, you will be able to open up your home, making it easier to clean and add new décor pieces and items you really love.
Deciding what stays and what goes can, of course, be difficult—but effective decisions in this area really do make all the difference. If you rarely or never use an item (whether it’s a piece of clothing, kid’s toy or lawn tool), and it doesn’t have any sentimental value, that’s something you’ll want to throw away or donate. This will make more room for additions you actually enjoy and care about using. As an added bonus, many of the items you no longer have use for can be used to help someone else (a friend or local family, for instance) in a big way.
Deep clean your home
Once your home is clear of any unwanted or unused items, it’s time to deep clean. Pay attention to big, expansive areas (like your living room or bedroom) as well as smaller, less frequently used spaces (like guestrooms and small hallway nooks). It’s not every day you get a chance to clean your home so thoroughly, so be sure to scrub, wipe or sweep every surface you come across. Once you’re through, you’ll have newly cleaned spots to store your clothes, kids’ toys, food and linens.
Identify problem spots
Every home has its share of “problem spots,” those areas we just can’t seem to keep clean. Take some time this year to identify those spots in your home and see why they always seem to be messy. Are they a high traffic area, or an easy receptacle spot for junk mail and miscellaneous items? Once you know why a spot is the way it is, you will be better able to keep it clean by finding new solutions. Depending on your specific needs, these can be anything from a coffee table trinket tray to a mudroom shoe rack… whatever it is that makes cleanup easier.
Rethink your needs
Once your home is clean and cleared of everything you don’t need, take some time to figure out what it is you do need. Do you need a designated guest room, for example, or would your spare space be better suited for a home office or playroom? Is your hall closet being utilized to the best of its ability, or can some of its items be moved to a better location? Once you know what you need and how to achieve it, you can rethink the setup of your home to make cleanup and organization a little more efficient.
Invest in storage you love
Finally, don’t forget the storage! If you find that you need new storage pieces to adequately store and contain all your home’s clothes, toys, books and miscellaneous items, be sure to pick pieces that you love. You’re more likely to use a storage system if you like the way it looks and feels in your home, so choose wisely!
By following these five steps and starting fresh new habits, 2016 might just be your home’s tidiest year yet.
